Beat - A single unit of a composition. In 4/4 time there are 4 beats to a measure.

Closed (position) notes are sounded on a guitar when the playing hand is pressed against the strings. The guitar is sounded with stopped or pressed strings.

Downstroke - movement of the guitar pick downwards against a string.

Eighth note - a unit of time measurement - an eighth(8th) note has a duration of 1/2 of a quarter note beatd. The eighth note is twice as fast as the quarter note.

Half note - a note with a duration of two beats ( two quarter notes).

Measure - a group of beats set off by a bar line.

Open(position) - Notes produced on a guitar with unstopped or unpressed strings. The 1st through 6th strings are E,B,G,D,A,E, which can be remembered by reciting, Every Bunny Gets Dinner At Easter are all open strings.

Quarter note - A quarter note has the duration of one beat.

Rest - A sign indicating that no sound is to be heard.

Treble Clef - Indicates that the note on the second line of the staff is G.

Upstroke - Movement of the guitar pick upwards against a string.

Whole note - A note with the duration of 4 quarter notes or 4 beats.
